Introduction to PixelLab

PixelLab is one of the most popular smartphone graphic-design applications, especially among Android users. It is mainly used for creating designs that involve text, images, stickers, shapes, quotes, logos, posters, banners, thumbnails, invitations, memes, and social-media graphics.

PixelLab is preferred by many users because it is simple, lightweight, mostly offline, and powerful enough for everyday mobile graphic design. It is not a full professional desktop design suite, but for mobile design work it provides many useful tools.

Why PixelLab Is Adopted

PixelLab is chosen because it supports several important design needs:

Creativity at its peak - 
PixelLab allows users to add text, stickers, shapes, drawings, images, arrows, Bezier curves, and other design elements. This supports most basic and intermediate design elements needed for mobile graphic design.
Offline use - PixelLab can be used without an internet connection. This makes it convenient for users who do not always have access to mobile data or Wi-Fi.
PLP project files - PixelLab saves editable project files in the PLP format. This allows users to save their work and continue editing later. PLP files can also be shared, allowing another PixelLab user to open and edit the design, depending on version compatibility.
High-quality rendering - Designs can be exported as JPEG or PNG. PNG is useful when transparency is needed, while JPEG is useful for smaller file sizes and photographic designs. If the canvas size is high enough, the output can be suitable for printing.
Fonts - PixelLab includes preinstalled fonts and also allows users to add external or custom fonts, usually in TTF or OTF format.
Minimal pressure, easy use - Many users like PixelLab because it is easy to learn, does not require compulsory membership for basic use, and generally has a simpler workflow than many cloud-based design apps.
Templates/presets - PixelLab may include preset templates, and many users also use PLP template packs shared online.

 

Basic Strengths and Weaknesses of PixelLab

Advantages

  • Easy to learn and use.
  • Works offline.
  • Supports layers.
  • Supports text effects such as stroke, shadow, emboss, 3D text, perspective, reflection, and curve.
  • Supports stickers, shapes, drawing, images, Bezier curves, and arrows.
  • Saves editable PLP files.
  • Exports JPEG and PNG.
  • Allows custom fonts.
  • Suitable for quotes, posters, banners, thumbnails, logos, memes, and social-media designs.
  • Does not require advanced design knowledge.

Disadvantages

  • Usually works on one project at a time; it is not strong for batch production.
  • On low-powered phones, some users report lag, freezing, or crashing, especially with large projects or many layers.
  • It lacks many advanced professional features found in desktop software.
  • It does not have strong built-in AI tools compared with newer AI design apps.
  • It may not be as collaborative as cloud-based tools like Canva or Adobe Express.
  • Some variants or modified versions may be unstable or unsafe if downloaded from untrusted sources.

Because of these limitations, alternative tools may be adopted when necessary. However, the main focus remains PixelLab because of its convenience and offline design capability.

 

 

THE PIXELLAB INTERFACE

Introduction

Interface refers to the graphical layout and interactive elements that users see and use to create, edit, and export designs. PixelLab is a versatile mobile graphic design application available on Android devices. Its interface is designed around a central canvas flanked by a top toolbar for global actions and a bottom toolbar for element-specific editing. The app supports both portrait and landscape screen orientations, adapting the layout accordingly.

Top Menu Bar (Global Controls)

The top bar remains visible regardless of which element is selected. It provides project-level commands:

Canvas / Design Sheet

The canvas is the central workspace where all creative activity happens.

  • Default State: Opens with a blank canvas and a default "New Text" element.
  • Gestures: Use pinch-to-zoom, two-finger rotate, and drag to move elements.
  • Gridlines: Enable from the top toolbar to align elements precisely.
  • Selection: Tap any element to select it; selection handles appear for resizing/rotating.

Canvas Settings (accessed via the bottom toolbar background icon or top menu options):

  • Color: Set a solid background color
  • Transparent: Enable transparent background (for PNG export)
  • Image Size: Choose presets (e.g., A4, square, social media sizes) or enter custom dimensions in pixels. Click for more on canvas size
  • Crop: Crop the canvas area
  • Background Image: Import from gallery, file manager, or camera

Canvas Effects:

  • Rotate, Vignette, Stripes, Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation


Bottom Menu Bar (Contextual Editing Tools)

The bottom toolbar adapts based on the selected element type. It is organized into primary category tabs:

A. Text Tab (A Icon) & Text Editor

Activated when text is selected. Options include:

  • Add Text / Quotes
  • Styles, Edit, Delete, Copy
  • Position: Absolute position, Relative position
  • Size & Padding
  • Color & Texture

  • Font & Style (Bold, Italic, Underline)
  • Curve (text on a path)

B. Object Tab (Hexagon Icon)

For adding and editing non-text elements:

  • Stickers — Add from built-in library or import custom
  • Import Image — From gallery, file manager, or camera
  • Draw — Freehand drawing with brushes
  • Shapes — Rectangles, circles, triangles, polygons
  • Bezier — Custom vector paths
  • Arrow — Directional arrow shapes

C. Layer Tab (Overlapping Squares Icon)

Manage the stacking order and visibility of all elements:

  • Rearrange — Drag to change layer order
  • Lock — Prevent accidental edits
  • Hide — Toggle visibility
  • Edit — Copy, relative size, relative position, rotate, send to front/back
  • Delete — Remove the layer

D. Drawing/Effects Tab (Circle Icon)

Access drawing tools and image effects.

E. Background Tab

Change the canvas background properties.

The layer panel is accessed via the top toolbar or by swiping. It provides a hierarchical view of all elements:

  • Rearrange: Drag layers up/down to change stacking order
  • Lock: Padlock icon to freeze a layer
  • Hide: Eye icon to toggle visibility
  • Edit Sub-menu:

PixelLab Variants

There are several PixelLab variants or themed versions commonly discussed by users. These variants are often created by different designers or communities and may include custom themes, fonts, stickers, templates, or preset packs. Modified versions of PixelLab circulate in the design community. They differ primarily in:

  • Theme Color & Appearance (e.g., Ultra Dark, Blue, Gold, Pink, Green, Red, Yellow) - The interface may appear dark, blue, golden, pink, green, red, or another colour theme.
  • Preset Templates (pre-loaded designs) - Some variants include extra template packs, quote designs, banner templates, thumbnail templates, or social-media presets.
  • Font Packs (additional bundled fonts) Many variants include additional fonts that may not be present in the standard version.
  • Sticker or shape packs - Some variants may include additional stickers, decorative elements, or design resources.
  • Modified interface details - Some variants may slightly rearrange icons, add extra menus, or change the appearance of buttons.

Caution About Variants

If a variant is not the official PixelLab app from a trusted app store, it should be used carefully. Modified APKs can sometimes contain bugs, compatibility problems, excessive ads, or security risks. For serious design work, the official version is usually safer and more reliable.

Tips for Navigating the Interface

  1. Start with the canvas size: Tap the three-dot menu (top right) → Image Size → set your dimensions before designing.
  2. Use layers early: Name or organize layers via the Layer Panel to avoid chaos in complex designs.
  3. Snap to grid: Enable gridlines from the top toolbar for pixel-perfect alignment.
  4. Save as PLP: Always save your work as a .plp project file before exporting, so you can re-edit later.
  5. Zoom for precision: Use the zoom control in the top bar for detailed text stroke and shadow adjustments.


Summary

The PixelLab interface follows a three-zone architecture: the Top Bar for global project control, the Canvas for visual composition, and the Bottom Bar for deep element editing. The Layer Panel provides hierarchical control over all objects. Mastering the relationship between these zones — and understanding how the bottom toolbar contextually adapts to the selected element — is the key to efficient design workflow in PixelLab.
